Due to the flooding of the region, many of our villages and towns were flooded, destroying our homes, our churches, our livestock and our crops. Thousands of people were displaced. The food has allowed our citizens to eat nutritious food while waiting for the water to recede...The soya beans, lentils and dried peas, wheat flour and oatmeal (were) distributed through...local churches in the affected communities. Priory was given to HIV/AIDs orphans and those people that are suffering form HIV/AIDS, women and the elderly. H. Biesenback, NCM Disaster Response Chair, Africa Region See full letter

SUDAN
Father Martin, as the Archdiocesan youth and students' Chaplain for Juba, Sudan, came to British Columbia to collect books for a school and library and to raise awareness of the plight of civilians in his area as "a consequence of the prolonged, devastating civil war in southern Sudan." Father Martin reported on the "deplorable conditions of the camps created by displaced people trying to escape the violence.

Soldiers in Juba

"The youth...are the most hard hit as many were forced to fight a war they did not want to get involved in and many have lost their lives. Many of them go without education as most of them either lost their parents...or were separated by the war."

This ammo dump was found within town. The town is also heavily mined, making it dangerous for children.

Ammo Dumps in Town

"For the suffering children who go without food and education, we intend to build a hostel where we can accommodate, feed them and provide at least basic education... The books donated will help us establish a youth library which will be the first of its kind in the town and some will be used for teaching in the Adult Education Programme we shall open."

Children often work a 17 hour day - getting up at 5 a.m. and working until 2 a.m. in the morning.
